2024's State of the City Address

January 19, 2024

Mayor Julius Bloomfield recaps the events and initiatives of 2023, as well as the progress made in two important areas, namely housing and crime. He also disagreed with those who believe Penticton isn't moving fast enough on its most pressing issues, stating "you can't turn a ship around quickly. It has to be a slow process to turn around before you go full-steam ahead"

Penticton is reported to be "well ahead of the game" with regards to the significant changes in provincial housing regulations, with the City's Housing Task Force presenting their recommendations a month prior to this event.

Following the Mayor's State of the City address was a fireside chat, where Mayor Bloomfield answered questions received from members of the community, and for some included an audience poll.

A special thank you to all of the sponsors who helped made this event a success. Without the generous monetary and in-kind contributions of local businesses and organizations, we would not be able to host this important address to the quality and reach it rightly deserves.

In his inaugural State of the City address, Mayor Bloomfield discussed his council's four strategic priorities, with an emphasis on embracing the change that is to come.

Highlights included creating a housing task force that would make recommendations to amend the Official Community Plan, as well as municipal land that could be used for increased housing. On the safety front, he spoke to putting together a community safety plan based on the recommendations made from a consultant, with closer ties to be made between first responders and service agencies. When speaking to business leaders, Mayor Bloomfield summarized it by saying "Making Penticton a vibrant place to live is economic development."
