2020 Business Excellence Awards

Thank You to everyone who took the time to nominate a business, organization or business leader for the 2020 Business Excellence Awards!  Congratulations to the 2020 Business Excellence Award Nominees and Finalists

The Business Excellence Awards are peer-nominated awards that exist to celebrate entrepreneurial and community achievement.  We invite you to take a moment to nominate and recognize a truly remarkable community leader that makes Penticton and area shine.

General Criteria

  • Business Excellence Awards are open to any business, organization or individual conducting business (excluding governments) within Penticton and area (e.g. Naramata, OK Falls, Keremeos, Summerland) with a valid business license (if applicable) in the community where they operate.
  • Not-for-profit organizations (excluding governments) may be nominated for the following excellence awards – Not for Profit, Workplace Culture, Service Excellence, Young Professional & Business Leader.
  • Businesses must be in operation for two (2) years with the exception of the New Business award category.
  • Past year’s award recipients may not be nominated in the same category for two (2) years following their win, but are eligible for other categories.   click here to view previous years
  • Businesses can be nominated for multiple award categories but can only be the recipient of one (1) award – i.e.  cannot win awards in multiple categories.
  • You DO NOT need to be a chamber member to nominate a business, organization or individual.
  • A business DOES NOT need to be a chamber member to be nominated.

How It Works

  • Complete the online nomination form – nominations closed Wednesday, Aug 26 at 8am
  • You may nominate the same business/organization/individual/employee for multiple awards BUT a separate nomination submission is required for each nomination.
  • Nominees will be notified by phone & email that they have been nominated for an award category, and given instructions on how to complete nominee application should they wish to be considered for the award.

This Award celebrates exceptional contributions to Penticton’s tourism and hospitality sector. Highlights how outstanding hospitality services have a significant impact on the economic, environmental, social and cultural aspects of our City.

Service Excellence sponsored by FortisBCG

This Award recognizes a business for their outstanding dedication and achievement to exceptional service standards that consistently exceed customer or guest expectations.

Not for Profit Excellence sponsored by Omland Heal Chartered Professional Accountants

This Award recognizes a non-profit organization (excluding government) which has made exceptional contributions to improve the well-being of individuals or families and has had a significant impact on building a stronger community

Community Support Excellence sponsored by Grant Thornton LLP 

The Award recognizes exemplary service in the community or elsewhere. Generally speaking, it is awarded to a business, individual or organization who does more than what would generally be expected.

Workplace Culture Excellence sponsored by South Okanagan Community & Immigrant Services

This Award honours a business that excels while demonstrating a commitment to a healthy work environment through practices that benefit employees physically, intellectually and/or emotionally. Special attention will be paid to businesses that have taken measures to improve the quality of life of their employees.

New Business Award sponsored by Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union

This Award honours a new business (2 years or less from the date of incorporation or first day of operation) that is achieving outstanding business performance and demonstrates exceptional promise for continued growth, while serving as an inspiration for other new businesses.

Growth & Development Excellence sponsored by BDO Canada LLP

This Award acknowledges a business that is striving for holistic balance@. Acknowledging that growth and development is an important part of their success, while making conscious choices to change the effects the business has on the land and environment.

Young Professional of the Year sponsored by JCI Penticton and Kettle Valley Memorial

This Award acknowledges a professional, aged 40 years or younger as of September 30, 2020, who has made an outstanding contribution to the business community, demonstrating excellence in their chosen field, overall business acumen and community involvement.

Business Leader of the Year sponsored by TD Canada Trust – Small Business Banking@

This Award acknowledges a business person who is the Founder, Owner, CEO, President, Senior Executive or Manager of a company or companies who has clearly demonstrated leadership and inspires others to improve the services or quality of life in Penticton (who does not fall under the criteria required for Young Professional of the Year).

Business of the Year Award sponsored by BDC Business Development Bank of Canada

This Award honours a business that demonstrates leadership in their business practices, their industry, and the Penticton and area business community, providing inspiration and being a positive role model (Non-profit organizations are not eligible for this award).

What are the key dates I should be aware of?

Do I need a business license to be nominated? You only need a business license if the municipality where your business is located requires that you have a business license e.g. in Naramata you do not require a business license; in Penticton you do require a business license.

My business is located in Naramata – am I eligible to participate? Yes – the Awards recognizes business and non-profits in Penticton and area, which includes Naramata, as well as OK Falls, Keremeos and Summerland.

Is there a fee associated with nominating a business or person for an Award? Nominating a deserving business or individual for an Award is FREE.

What happens if I am nominated? If you or your business have been nominated for a Business Excellence Awards, a representative from the Penticton Chamber of Commerce will contact you by phone and email.  You can choose if you would like to proceed with your nomination.

I accept my nomination! Now what? Fantastic! If you are nominated and choose to move forward with your nomination, we will send a digital nomination package for you to fill out and will ask for supporting documents and references.

My nomination package is submitted, now what? The selection committee (made up community and business leaders) diligently gets to work reviewing the submitted nomination packages and will select the top three (3) finalists for each award category.

I am a finalist! What is the next step?  Congratulations! Our team and the awards selection committee (made up of community citizens) will get to work to schedule a follow-up interview with you. They may ask for additional information about you and your business.

How will my business benefit from being nominated for an Award?  Being nominated for an Award earns your business valuable positive public relations. The Chamber announces all nominees via a press release which is sent to local media.  All Award nominees are highlighted in the Small Business Week insert that is included in the Penticton Western News in October. You will also receive positive exposure at the Awards celebration evening.
